Hunting Knife FAQ's
Are hunting knives legal in Australia?
Can I carry a hunting knife in public in Australia?
Generally, no — not without a valid reason.
Even if a knife is legal, carrying it in public requires a lawful reason. If stopped by police, you need to explain why you have it. Without a clear justification, you could face penalties. The main legal challenges arise not from owning normal hunting knives at home, but from carrying or transporting them in public without a clear and credible lawful excuse. Hunting knives are classified as “controlled weapons” in some states, and illegal possession or carry can carry penalties of up to 12 months jail (or two years jail if carried into or near licensed premises where alcohol is sold).
